Simple Window Covering Tricks for a Better Car Camping Night’s Sleep in Your SUV

When you’re setting up your SUV for a night under the stars, comfort and privacy make all the difference. While our Grotto Base - car camping platform takes care of the sleeping part, you can elevate your full camping experience with a few incredibly simple window-covering tricks. The best part? You don’t need fancy gear or expensive custom made shades, just a bit of creativity and a couple of everyday items.

Front Windshield: The Easiest Fix in the World

For the front window, nothing beats the classic reflective sunshade. You can pick one up at any gas station, servo, or convenience store, and it works beautifully as an instant privacy screen. Pop it open, slide it into place, and you’re done. It blocks the light, adds a touch of insulation, and fits the spirit of simple, efficient SUV camping perfectly.

Front Side Windows: Custom Fit on a Budget

If your side windows aren’t tinted, you can still get full privacy with almost zero cost. All you need is cardboard and a marker.

Here’s the trick we use ourselves:

  1. Put the window down.

  2. Place a piece of cardboard on the outside of the window frame.

  3. From inside the vehicle, trace the shape of the window using a marker.

  4. Cut along the line and test the fit.

  5. Make small adjustments if necessary.

That’s it. You now have perfectly fitted window covers that slide in and stay in place. We’ve been using this method for ages—it’s cheap, fast, and surprisingly durable.

Passenger Windows: Stay Ventilated, Stay Bug-Free

For the passenger windows, airflow is key—especially on warm nights. This is where sock-style window shades shine. They slide over the top of your door like a sleeve, giving you breathable ventilation, privacy, and bug protection all at once. You can crack the window as much as you like without worrying about mozzies ruining your night, and the mesh fabric keeps the inside of your Grotto feeling cool and comfortable.

The Magic Touch: A Sky Full of Stars

Once your windows are covered and the night settles in, the real magic begins. If your SUV has a sunroof, you already know the feeling—lying on your platform bed, cosy, private, and gazing straight up into a full view of glittering stars. It’s an experience no tent can match. It’s one of those simple outdoor pleasures that remind you why sleeping in your SUV is so special.
